LTC Foundational Domains Process

To complement the model of care created by Michener Institute, the training platform to support healthcare professional deployment in Long Term Care (LTC), Touchstone Institute created a competency framework to outline essential knowledge and abilities, and to identify opportunities for additional training.

To arrive at the domains we looked to The Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative (CIHC) National Interprofessional Competency Framework and identified key competencies within collaborative care.  Next, we reviewed the roles within the LTC setting and conducted an environmental scan of LTC principles to identify broad competencies, essential knowledge and abilities for this context.  Consultations were held with subject matter experts to validate this work, and to learn more about how it might be put to use.

The result is a competency framework that can inform various projects like curriculum and assessment development, HR policies, job descriptions, and performance reviews.
