Practice Ready Ontario (PRO)

Become a PRO Assessor or Clinical Field Assessment Site

Help PRO increase family physician supply across the province.

The Government of Ontario launched Practice Ready Ontario (PRO) to expand the healthcare workforce and connect people to care. This program removes barriers for experienced, internationally trained physicians so they can practice in Ontario sooner, especially in high-need rural communities.

There are two ways you can help.

1. Become an Assessor

If you are a family physician delivering care in a rural community or area of high need in Ontario, you can help build capacity for family medicine by joining the PRO program as an assessor. For 12 weeks, you will assess internationally educated family physicians to determine their readiness for Ontario practice.

In this Clinical Field Assessment (CFA), you will:

  • Support a health human resource strategy to increase physician supply.
  • Receive training and competitive remuneration for the role ($25,200 per candidate).
  • Participate in a growing network of rural communities and areas of high need addressing underserved populations.
  • Develop as a mentor, supporting the growth of future practicing Ontario physicians.

Earn continuing professional development (MainPro+) Certified and Certified Assessment credits from the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

If you are interested in becoming an assessor, fill out the Expression of Interest Form below or contact the PRO team if you have questions.

Clinical field assessors are the engine of Practice Ready Ontario. The physician assessors who work in high-need rural areas that are the program’s current focus see the potential for family medicine as a profession and for underserved communities across our province.”

2. Host a clinical field assessment site

PRO requires clinical field assessment sites to evaluate a candidate's readiness for Ontario practice during a 12-week assessment.

Designated sites must:

  • Expose candidates to all relevant aspects of generalist family medicine across various practice settings, including office, hospital, and emergency room.
  • Provide an appropriate workspace to host candidates.

Be located in an area that can confirm the competencies necessary to work in the specified return of service communities (rural communities and areas of high need).

You (or another physician within your practice) may act as the PRO assessor responsible for supervising and assessing the candidate. Please review the Assessor eligibility requirements to ensure all criteria are met.

Clinical field assessment sites are vital to PRO because, otherwise, we cannot assess internationally trained physicians.

To apply to host a clinical field assessment site, fill out the Expression of Interest Form and contact the Practice Ready Ontario team if you have questions.
