Ready? Set. Nurse! A Communication Self Assessment for Canadas Nurses

Touchstone Institute is working to address professional communication challenges faced by many internationally educated nurses (IENs) as they complete competency and language examinations to qualify for registration in Canada. Accuracy in language use and knowledge of nursing communication strategies can increase IEN success and preparation for a healthcare work environment that prioritizes collaboration, patient-centred problem solving, and patient safety in the workplace.

This project aims to increase nurses’ understanding of communication competencies as demonstrable and essential. The objective is to create a self-assessment that is relevant, authentic, valid, and accurate. The innovative virtual self-assessment tool will leverage the latest in artificial intelligence to assess communicative readiness in nursing professionals. The tool will be designed through collaboration, consultation, and partnerships between nursing professionals and language specialists, and include nurse educators and internationally educated nurses.
